Whilst the power hungry megalomaniacs at Rockstar sit on their thrones made out of people’s expectations and desires, maniacally laughing over our pallid bodies begging for a sweet release like, a release date, another trailer, a lock of hair from the main character, pretty much any tangible revelation that can keep our bubbling excitement at bay; we here at WhatCulture towers are ponderously looking forward to one of the biggest gaming releases of all time.
With anything that excites you, comes niggling doubts, and whilst I’d rather entertain the prospect of a decade living with Piers Morgan than comprehending a poor GTA instalment, there are doubts, mistakes could be made and if so a brilliant gaming experience could be ruined…Kind of…Maybe.
Luckily for humanity, we are here to guide the world with a helping hand to direct Rockstar’s latest foray in to the criminal underworld.

1. Placing Too Much Emphasis On The Technical Side

It’s common in a world of advancing technology and ego massage for people to get lost in the loveliness of their own design. It’s a shame, but mediums of entertainment have become so ignorant of anything other than how it all looks it’s become as upsettingly surreal and vain as an episode of America’s Next Top Model; only with less bitching, bulimia and underwater photo shoots of video game characters (If you’re unfamiliar with America’s Next Top Model and think I’m joking about Underwater photo shoots, I’m not; it’s ridiculous.)
This is especially true in modern gaming, style takes the priority over other aspects. Take Battlefield 3 as an example; does anyone have anything interesting to say about it other than the fact it’s new engine was quite nice to look at? Even most of the pre-release buzz was about the design and little all else; because everything else sucked.
While it’s natural for technological advancements to be an interesting feature; Rockstar can’t prioritise this as a way of impressing people; when the game lacks substance.

Tron Legacy looked pretty, doesn’t stop it being the worst film I’ve ever seen; Battlefield 3 looked pretty, doesn’t stop it being the dullest game I’ve ever played. GTA 5 can look pretty, but it must do a lot more than that.

2. Lack of Environment Improvements

I know, this may seem like a bit of a hypocritical juxtaposition of points but give me a minute.
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was possibly the most expansive and well trodden of all the GTA games, no environment or game captured the imagination of people as well as that has and because of that its Los Santos setting is probably the most familiar of the GTA environments.
Therefore it’s imperative that Rockstar do not cash this in and regurgitate the same city; part of the fun of GTA is exploring the new environments and getting to know them, a digitally enhanced repeat of the previous Los Santos can’t be their approach.
Granted; it’s the same city so it will possess the same DNA, but 20 years will have passed in the GTA universe since the events of San Andreas and a shakeup in design is necessary to stop it getting tired.

3. Predictability

Grand Theft Autos of the past have followed a particular formula; man enters city, man gets involved in organised crime because he is inherently bad, man climbs ladder and owns the world. Kills a lot of people along the way.
While this is tried and tested and has been taking on a different flavour of late (Niko Bellic was driven by vengeance and a warped perception of the American dream, CJ is fighting for family honour and escaping the hood), the formula remains the same.
Now no-one would want a drastic overhaul of this formula however a slight inversion would go a long way to keeping the game fresh; especially considering they are going back to a city we were involved with not that long ago.

4. Prioritising Realism Over Fun

The old age fan argument about GTA 4; was it too reigned in?
Whilst it was a truly tremendous game, it was possibly the most restricted in terms of player freedom and expression with a lack of character customisation, purchasable items and just general freedom. Breaking in to a military facility to steal a tank felt like a far off memory where it used to be as common as gunfire, death and the word ‘homie’.
Though certain aspects of the third generation of GTA games danced along the borderline of ridiculous; it always felt believable in the GTA universe and though GTA 4 was an incredibly good story; past that there wasn’t a lot of incentive to keep exploring the world as it was incredibly reigned in. This is the same with the missions; they were exciting but eventually tiresome as the reigned in world of GTA 4 took its toll and the missions failed to expand.
We don’t want another Saints Row 3 on our hands because, let’s face it, who on earth would want that? But a wilder, more out there streak would help keep the game as fun as GTA games of old.

5. Sacrificing Story For Scope

It’s the developing trend in open world games; story takes a backseat in place of the collectible, bonus mission driver that takes you careering around in a boring mosey through missions and tasks which don’t particularly mean anything.
Take perennial borefest Skyrim; a game that gave very little story or drive and instead decided to overwhelm you with a wide array of tasks each as dull as the last. Batman Arkham City was an impressive open world but came at a massive cost to the storyline which wasn’t a patch on the opening Arkham Asylum. Similarly with multiplayer; every first person shooter talks about multiplayer more than story, cashing in with dull maps and formulaic methods of playing to get out of thinking of anything original.
Rockstar have always been strongly focused on their story; giving you 40 hours of narrative before giving you plenty of freedom to roam; it must maintain this tight focus otherwise risk falling in to the trap already filled with games that thought collectibles could describe how little they had to offer.
